NATIONAL FILM INSTITUTE (NFI) JOS, GETS NEW RECTOR

A new rector has been appointed for the National Film Institute (NFI), Jos, Nigeria’s premier film academic institution. The new rector is Professor Pomak Frank Tengya.

In a statement issued in Jos, Plateau State and signed by Brian Etuk, Spokesperson for the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) – proprietor of NFI; Professor Tengya’s conditions of appointment is as contained in the Secondment Provisions of the Nigerian Public Service Rules and Regulations. The appointment is effective from March 1st 2026. Until, his appointment, Tengya was at the Theatre and Film Studies Department, Taraba State University, Jalingo – Nigeria.

Tengya, a Professor of Comparative Theatre and Film Studies will be bringing his scholarly and administrative experience garnered over the years to bear as the new rector of NFI; drawing from his impressive leadership and academic deliveries at reputable African Universities (University of Jos, Nigeria, Kenyatta University, Nairobi Kenya and Taraba State University, Jalingo Nigeria), including authoring several academic publications, serving on several Senate, Faculty and Departmental Committees as well as holding the position of Director, International Collaborations and Linkages, Taraba State University Jalingo, until his appointment as Rector, NFI.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ali Nuhu, NFC’s Managing Director/Chief Executive who also is the Chairman, Governing Council of the National Film Institute has congratulated Professor Pomak Frank Tengya for emerging as the institutes new rector, charging him to deploy his wealth of experience to his new post. Nuhu averred that Tengya’s appointment comes at a time when Management of the NFC is working assiduously to upscale all academic programmes being offered at the NFI to par with global best standards and drive the developmental agenda of the nation’s Orange Economy; especially in entrepreneurial training, capacity building and skills development. Dr. Nuhu, in the statement was quoted as saying that, efforts in repositioning the NFI has been topmost on the agenda of NFC management within the past two years.

Training, capacity building and skills development in film production at NFI, Dr. Nuhu maintains is very key in leveraging on technology and improved learning templates to potentiate the nation’s quest in developing its creative economy. The recently introduced master degree programme in Film Culture & Archival Studies, upgrade of its degree and diploma programmes, in addition to the aggressive search for bilateral and multilateral physical infrastructural development partners among others, further confirms NFC’s desire to effectively drive the growth of NFI.

The National Film Institute offers joint Master’s Degree in Film Culture & Archival Studies; Bachelor’s Degree in Film Arts, Diploma as well as Specialized Entrepreneurial Certificate Programmes, in Film Production.
